The key to operational excellence and performance management is to identify an organization’s value drivers, focus on them, and align the organization to drive improvements and their bottom-line results. It seems as simple as that; and for most it is very difficult to achieve. The fact that there are many management methodologies, such as Balanced Scorecard, Performance Prism, Fve Forces and Lean Manufacturing just to name a few.

What is the right framework?

Many of these management methodologies are at work in many organizations; even thought that they strive to improve operational and financial performance they are disconnected from one another. The two that stand out the most are the Balanced Scorecard and Lean Manufacturing; both of these management methodologies and tools are also fundamentally disconnected from the enterprise business information systems. The fact that many management methodologies are typically driven by Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint and are not reflected in the core business systems create barriers for sustained success. While these management methodologies can provide significant benefits; the fact that they are not embedded into core performance management systems limits their success. The result is that many of these methodologies are implemented as tools without the proper understanding of the underlying operational and business systems processes and their performance metrics and context in-mind.
